Marshall Islanders' Mattang, Rebbelith and Meddo stick charts for navigation by ocean swells

Marcia Ascher has also published an important article on Marshall Islanders' charts for highly accurate navigation of the South Pacific in small boats, based on knowing and feeling constant ocean swells and the ways these are refracted around islands.

A brief film from the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration shows a bit more about Marshallese navigation. Here is a link to a longer film about Pau Piailug, master Marshallese navigator who revived mapping and navigating traditions by ocean swells during the day and by stars at night.
